If your swimming pool pump is running hot, there could be a number of reasons this is happening.
Worn Pump Shaft Seal
If your pump shaft seal is starting to go bad, it could start to bind and make the electric motor jam up and run hotter.
Pump Motor Bearings Have No Grease
Pool pump motor bearings are considered sealed motor bearings and you cannot add more grease to them when the grease runs out. If all of the grease burns out of the motor bearings the bearings will run hot and make your motor overheat.
Clogged Filter Restricting Pump Flow
If your pool filter is clogged, it will not allow the correct amount of flow from your pool pump, this is called back pressure and will cause your pool pump to run hot.
Pool Pump Motor Windings Bad
Inside of your pool pump motor is something called motor windings. If these get to wet then they can short out and cause your motor to over heat.
Clogged Skimmer Basket
One of the most overlooked causes of a pump running hot, and not having a prime is that the skimmer basket or skimmer baskets are clogged and need to be emptied.
Pump In Direct Sunlight
If your pump is in direct sunlight, this could be causing your pump to overheat.
If you do not feel like troubleshooting or repairing your pool pump, then depending on the age of your pool pump, you may just want to replace it with a new one.
